THE WORK, EXPLAINED
Start with the condition.
Understand the scope.
Describe when the ignition sticks and whether another key behaves differently. Ask whether the fault is in the key, cylinder, steering lock or another part of the system. Discuss service versus replacement, compatibility with the existing key arrangement and the operating positions that will be checked after the work.
What may be involved
- ignition cylinder
- keyed-alike pinning
- retaining pins
- steering column trim clips
Ask the provider to distinguish existing parts to inspect, proposed replacements, and tools, materials or reports included in the service. Confirm the work and exclusions after assessment; this list does not mean that every item will be supplied or replaced.
LOCAL RESEARCH / Golden Gate Park
Local context
California's Department of Consumer Affairs publishes consumer tips for hiring a locksmith. It states that in California locksmiths must be licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, asks consumers to verify the licence online at bsis.ca.gov or by telephone, and says locksmiths are required by law to carry a pocket version of their licence and should be asked to show it on arrival. It adds that a contractor's licence is also required where work at a single site exceeds a stated amount. Use it before agreeing work; this page carries no verified licence record for any business.
